New Kids On the Block Smells Like Teen Spirit

5375d290-566e-11e5-b046-b14e1b58d1e6_alyssa-milano-teen-steamI remember it like yesterday.  The year was around 1991.  I was about 13 years old and at that time I was still a teeny bopper.  I read Teen Bop magazine for those of you who remember it.  I was in love with Joey from New Kids on the Block and I was still using Aqua-net to make my bangs stand straight up.  My room was covered with pictures torn out of magazines and I wanted to be just like Alyssa Milano.

In my room was an old radio that had a turn table on top and knobs that moved the little red dial things left and right to change the station.  I don’t even think CDs had come out yet.  They may have but we certainly couldn’t afford them or a device to play them on if they did.

But there it was, me all teeny bopper-ish and still wearing hyper color cloths and neon was still trending when it happened.  There are few moments in a person’s life that they can remember from when they were a kid that changed them forever and set them on a new path.  This was mine.

I was messing around with the dials on the radio one afternoon when this sound came out that was like the dark clouds of Seattle opened just to shine the light on me.  It was like the Goldberg’s episode where Erica hears Rush for the first time.  It was like being mind blown and set on a new path.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was playing.  It was the first time I had ever heard it and I was instantly drawn to it.  I started jumping on my bed and I never went back to N.K.O.T.B.  I knew then that THAT was the music I liked and I knew it the moment I heard it.

Moments (positive ones) that change your life in an instant are so rare but when they happen, they happen to you forever.  Nirvana did and it was an amazing time to grow up where music that changed people’s lives forever, happened.  I grew up about 20 minutes north of Seattle.  Growing up there during that time has influenced me in ways only those who grew up there can ever understand.

  1. New Kids on the Block is my favourite band of 90s. NKOTB had so many hits! The ones I remember are ‘Tonight’, ‘Baby, I Believe In You’ and, of course their hit ‘Step By Step’. These are real songs, not garbage like today! And it is sooo good NKOTB have a tour in 2019! And I’m going to visit New Kids on the Block concert this year. The concert dates is here: New Kids on the Block tour Nashville. Check it out and maybe we can even visit one of the performances together!
